Scotty McCreery – Clear as Day
Last season was the first time that I watched an entire season of American Idol. But, from day one it was apparent that Scotty McCreery was different from the rest of the competition. Every week he was always my favorite and I was glad to see him win it all.
So, when his first album hit the street I was quick to add it to my iTunes collection. I must admit that my collection of Country music is quite limited, so I don’t have much to compare this album to. I have listened to it about a dozen times now and I am happy to report that there isn’t a single song that I want to skip.
The album is well put together with a combination of fast and slow songs, sad songs and upbeat ones. If you didn’t know who Scotty was, you would think he is much older than 18. He has an amazing deep voice that is perfect for country music. Based upon this album, I think that he will have a long and successful career.
Clear as Day is an album about love, friends, parents, cars, and faith. This album has everything that you would expect from a good country album. Some of my favorite songs are:
Track 1 – Out of Summertime
This is an upbeat song about a lost love as the summertime just wanted long enough. The inference is that school has started and they are 300 miles apart. He is continually thinking about her getting away. “Of all the things that I let get away, she is the one that keeps me awake at night.”
Track 2 – Clear as Day
This is a slow sad song about losing a loved one. The song tells a story of happy times, winning a ball game, and falling love. The song hits home when Scotty signs, “Last think you said was, ‘I’ll call you tomorrow’. That’s a call you never got to make.”
Track 5 – Water Tower Town
Water Tower Town is my favorite song on the album as it paints a picture of southern small town life. “Friday night football is king and sweet tea goes good with anything”. This song makes me want to move out of Atlanta.
Track 9 – Dirty Dishes
This song makes me appreciate the everyday things in life that we often take for granted. In the song the mother gives a grace thanking God for dirty dishes, slamming doors, clothes scattered all over the floor, and noisy children. Her point is that she is thankful for her family and all that they have together.
Track 12 – That Old King James
This is a song about a Bible that has been passed down for several generations. The story tells how the book has helped his family get through cancer, war, and crazy kids. ”The cover is torn and the leather is worn on that old King James”.
